OBAMA CRITICIZED BY DAVY CROCKETT

I remember growing up in the 50's with the Disney stories of Davy Crockett. Yes, I even had a coonskin cap and I cried at the Alamo. One of the real memories was the episode when Davy went to Congress. I distinctly remember how it showed the utter contempt Members of Congress and other elitists showed towards this "backwoods redneck."

I was searching to see if I could find any quotes that might sound eerily similar to the nonsense that has been written about another "backwoods" and "inexperienced" political figure. Sarah Palin.

I came across this blog SamuelatGilgal.

I am sure my readers will see how profound and relevant Davy's words are. I seriously doubt the Great Redistributor of Wealth or any of his cohorts will read it or understand. Let's only hope that on November 4th, most Americans are inspired by this Great American to do the right thing.

What Our Present Congress Could Learn From Davy Crockett

Congressman Davy Crockett

According to historical lore, it was In the early 1800's that Congress was considering a bill to appropriate tax dollars for the widow of a distinguished naval officer. Several beautiful speeches had been made in support of this bill. It seemed that everyone in the House favored it. The Speaker of the House was just about to put the question to a vote, when Davy Crockett, famous frontiersman and then Congressman from Tennessee, rose to his feet.

"Mr. Speaker, I have as much respect for the memory of the deceased and as much sympathy for the suffering of the living as any man in this House, but we must not permit our respect for the dead or our sympathy for a part of the living to lead us into an act of injustice to the balance of the living. I will not go into an argument to prove that Congress has no power to appropriate this money as an act of charity. Every member upon this floor knows it. We have the right, as individuals to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity, but as members of Congress we have no right to so appropriate a dollar of the public money. Some eloquent appeals have been made to us upon the ground that it is a debt due the deceased. Sir, this is no debt. We cannot without the grossest corruption, appropriate this money as the payment of a debt. We have not the semblance of authority to appropriate it as a charity. I cannot vote for this bill, but I will give one week's pay, and if every member of Congress will do the same, it will amount to more than the bill asks."

There was silence on the floor of the House as Crockett took his seat. When the bill was put to a vote, instead of passing unanimously as had been expected, it received only a few votes. The next day a friend approached Crockett and asked why he spoken against a bill for such a worthy cause. In reply, Crockett related the following story:

Just a few years before, he had voted to spend $20,000.00 of public money to help the victims of a terrible fire in Georgetown. When the legislative session was over, Crockett made a trip back home to do some campaigning for his re-election. In his travels he encountered one of his constituents, a man by the name of Horatio Bunce. Mr. Bunce bluntly informed Crockett, "I voted for you the last time. I shall not vote for you again."

Crockett, feeling he had served his constituents well, was stunned. He inquired as to what he had done to so offend Mr. Bunce. Bunce replied,

"You gave a vote last winter which shows that either you have not capacity to understand the Constitution, or that you are wanting in the honesty and firmness to be guided by it. The Constitution, to be worth anything, must be held sacred, and rigidly observed in all its provisions." "I take the papers from Washington and read very carefully
all the proceedings of Congress. My papers say that last winter you voted for a bill to appropriate $20,000.00 to some sufferers by a fire. Well, Colonel, where do you find in the Constitution any authority to give away public money in charity? No Colonel, Congress has no right to give charity. Individual members may give as much of their own money as they please, but they have no right to touch a dollar of the public money for that purpose.

"The people have delegated to Congress, by the Constitution, the power to do certain things. To do these, it is authorized to collect and pay moneys, and for nothing else. Everything beyond this is usurpation, and a violation of the Constitution. You have violated the Constitution in what I consider to be a vital point. It is a precedent fraught with danger to the country, for when Congress once begins to stretch its power beyond the limits of the Constitution, there is no limit to it and no security for the People."

"I could not answer him," said Crockett. "I was so fully convinced that he was right." I said to him, "Well, my friend, you hit the nail upon the head when you said I had not sense enough to understand the Constitution. If you will forgive me and vote for me again, if I ever vote for another non constitutional law, I wish I may be shot."

After finishing the story, Crockett said,

"Now sir, you know why I made that speech yesterday. There is one thing now to which I will call your attention. You remember that I proposed to give a weeks pay? There are in that House many very wealthy men, men who think nothing of spending a weeks pay, or a dozen of them, for a dinner or a wine party when they have something to accomplish by it. Some of these same men made beautiful speeches upon the debt of gratitude which the country owed the deceased, yet not one of them responded to my proposition. Money with them is nothing but trash when it is to come out of the people. But it is the one great thing for which most of them are striving, and many of them sacrifice honor, integrity, and justice to obtain it." [Emphasis Added]

Fred Thompson Tells It Like It Is

Click on the link and check out this video from Fred. This may just be the best thing I have seen that lay's out precisely why we need to get out the vote for McCain.

I will admit that I was one of those who was not an enthusiastic supporter during the primary season. Maybe you were too. Yes, the selection of Sarah got me excited. No doubt she has a bright future despite the naysayers. Keep in mind tho, we are electing a President. How anyone can look at both candidates and not see there is only ONE QUALIFIED LEADER!

Fred presents a foreboding view of the future of America, mentioning the economic crisis and the possibility of terrorist attacks. His best words tell us just how wrong it would be elect a President,

"everything upon the eloquence and inexperience of one who has toed the extreme liberal and partisan line his entire political life, as much as he tries to blur that fact now."

I for one agree and hope that most of my fellow Americans will 'wake up' and join with John McCain to continue his lifelong fight devoted to defending those principles that made our country great.

"duty, honor, dedication, sacrifice."

Who is the Real Change Agent for Our Country

Many may believe that BO has already won because the people are wanting 'change,' and he is the self-anointed 'agent,' we need.

No doubt we do need a great deal of change. Yet most people and the media seem to forget that what needs to be changed has been that way for a long time. You have to almost admire Obama and the Democrats for being able to place all of the blame on Bush and the Republicans. As if everything that now plagues us has just happened in the last 8 years.

No doubt the GOP missed out on a golden opportunity. Yet, how soon we forget they controlled both Houses of Congress for 40+ years.

McCain may not have been my first choice. Indeed I was probably quite blasé. So let me say it straight-out for the pundits that continue to criticize his biggest decision. His choice of Sara Palin was absolutely brilliant and a masterful stroke.

Indeed, it was déjà-vu 1980 when Reagan picked Bush. I am sure that a historical review of that pick will show the media considered that a major blunder too. Why? Because it was not expected. See the media just does not like to be caught off-guard.

John McCain has absolutely won me over. I believe with my entire being that he is the only one who will bring our country 'real change.' He is the one to wake up the echoes of Abe, Teddy, Barry and Ronnie. All of them understood the wisdom of Churchill's words.

"There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction."

Clearly John and Sara understand this fundamental concept. I am afraid that BO probably should have read the words of the great American artist, Thomas Hart Benson.

"You can't change your mind up on a scaffold without the risk of everything going awry.
You must solve your problems before you get up there."

Benton was known for rejecting the "orthodoxies of modernism, which he saw as elitist, neurotic, and obscurantist". His works are best known to show the real American spirit, "steeped in North American folk traditions" and free of "the decadence of European high culture".

Gee that almost sounds like 'Joe the Plumber' and those "racist, oops, redneck, Pennsylvanians. Surely they are the same people who cling to their guns and religion.

So yes America, let's change but not just for the sake of change.

John McCain and Sara Palin remind me of the famous words spoke by another War Hero, Republican Senator, Carl Schurz [believe he was a Pennsylvanian too] during the days of Reconstruction.

"My Country Right or Wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right."

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House

Many of you may have already seen this one. Pretty funny take-off on the biblical passage. No doubt a masterful satire on BO. Satire by its very nature is usually over the top. Yet, its does tend to make us take a little closer look at reality.

The video is probably not so much a comment on BO, rather, it really calls-out the blind faith of many of the followers. Let's just hope they do not have the powers or abilities of the original disciples.

Maybe there is some truth to Revealations - Chapter 13. [The Apocolypse in the Catholic Bible]. Go read it and decide for yourself. Let's just hope we have not yet seen the 4 horsemen.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels?

I am sure many of you have heard about 527 groups. These are political organizations that have a non-profit status. They can raise money and spend it just about any way they want. For the most part they are not covered by any campaign finance law.

The "Swift Boat" group in 2004 may have been considered so effective that it has now become a political verb – swiftboated! Yet the main stream media [drive-by's] usually do little or nothing to check out left wing groups.

Many not only get a "free pass," but often are given the equivalent of a free ad. See one here at FloridaToday.com, for a group called BillionairesforBush, regarding their plans to protest a visit by John McCain. I wonder, would a 527 that was on the right-wing fringe and supporting McCain get the same privilege.

Doubtful. In fact, John would more than likely repudiate any such group. Of course even a moderate group would probably not be given free PR.

I did a search on this group at Alexa.com. Found 234 sites that link to them. See the full listing here. Here is just a few of the more noteworthy ones. [Note: In all fairness just because a link exists does not always indicate support by that site]

  • Democratic National Committee
  • MichaelMoore.com
  • WhiteHouse.org [Not the real one]
  • National Review Online
  • Slate Magazine
  • Daily Koz
  • Democratic Underground
  • The Village Voice
  • NYU Student Atheist Club [Note Founder of Billionaires is a lecturer at NYU]
  • WhyWeHateBush.com
  • TakeOverWorld.info.

I can see why some do not want to focus on who are your Associates and/or Pals. Oh yeah, none of this is at all about "class warfare." Guess some people really think most of us are just plain stupid? Why else would they continue to insult our intelligence?

I guess it's true. "We are bitter," ..."cling to our guns and our religion" ... and "have antipathy to people who aren't like" us.

Gosh I think I have heard that somewhere before!

DocHarv’s Sausage n Peppers

I originally wrote this 2 years ago for a company sponsored booth at the Bonita Springs, Florida, Relay For Life. We sold these sandwiches and raised about $1,500. Just thought it was a good time to share with the world. You will also now understand why I use docharv as my virtual log-in. No one ever again will be DocHarv.

Doc Harv's Sausage n Peppers n Onions

The Rest of the Story

DocHarv was a BIG man who, at 6'4" and 250 lbs., was seldom in his life physically challenged. He was known to have the ability, with his extreemely large fingers, to be able to stop a 1,500 lb bull, in his tracks, by inserting them into its nose and clamping down. when he was 60 years old he even drove himself to the emergency room in the midst of a severe heart attack. 3 weeks later he was back to work. he even overcame 2 strokes in his later years.

10 years ago, DocHarv, died after another battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma. He expressed to me, a year before his death, that he really did not have any pain. the hard part was that no longer could he use his strength. yet he also told me, he considered it a blessing, because it made him appreciate and understand the suffering of his savior, jesus.'

I was going to say he lost the battle, but, I was reminded of what the legendary coach of the Packers, Vince Lombardi used to say.

"We never lost, We just ran out of time."

Now that may seem a little arrogant to some, but, it really is a statement that winning is only a matter of time. DocHarv often said, "do not tell me you tried, because that is only an advance excuse for failure."

DocHarv never gave up. he fought to the end. More than anyone I have ever known, he enjoyed a party and good food. 4 days before he died, he insisted on attending a neighbor's 4th of July party. Why? Because he had been invited. Too weak to walk, his very tall son-in-law carried him on his shoulders. DocHarv even drank his last beer.

So for everyone, as you walk or run during this relay, ask you to remember DocHarv. Every step or stride you take is helping us to get that much closer to crossing the goal line. We will win and some day no one will ever again run out of time.

Now you know the rest of the story about DocHarv and why I named this sandwich after him!
